  1. Is divorce the primary focus of your practice? Some lawyers practice several areas of law. Check to see if the lawyer devotes most or all of his or her time to divorce law.
  2. Have you represented clients with similar cases? All cases are unique, but the lawyer may have been successful in another case on an issue that affects your case.
  3. Does you represent women and men in divorce cases? A lawyer who represents all or mostly men may be more focused on issues that affect men in divorce cases.
  4. How much do you charge in a divorce case? A lawyer won’t be able to give you a precise figure as the total fee will depend on such things as the length of the case, the issues that arise, and how contentious the divorce gets. However, the lawyer can give you an hourly figure and let you know how often you’ll be billed.
  5. How do you communicate with clients? You may be fine with emailing your lawyer when you have a question, or you may prefer phone calls. Communication between you and your lawyer is critical, so make sure the two of you are on the same page.
  1. Couple going through divorce signing papersWho will handle the case? You may be talking to a partner who will delegate the bulk of your case to a less experienced attorney in the firm. The lawyer may delegate much of the one-to-one communication with you to a paralegal. Find out on the front end what to expect.
  2. What is your level of experience? See how much experience the lawyer has in the divorce area. Check to see if the lawyer has experience in the courtroom. You need a lawyer who can litigate the divorce if a settlement can’t be reached.
  3. Do you have local experience? Divorce laws vary from state to state, and you need a lawyer with experience in the state where you live.
  4. How many cases do you have? If the lawyer already has more clients and cases than he or she can handle, your case may not get the attention it deserves. You want a lawyer who can devote the time necessary to get you a favorable divorce.
  5. What is your strategy in a case? If you want an aggressive divorce lawyer, make sure that’s what you’re getting. Don’t simply turn your case over to the lawyer and hope for the best.
